Study Path

Introduction

BAESP strives to provide students with a sound foundation in the knowledge and skills they will need in order to communicate effectively in English for professional purposes in Hong Kong and internationally, where English functions as the key lingua franca of business. Accordingly, the curriculum consists of three blocks of studies:

  • Fifteen core compulsory subjects, organized around three topics: (a) Advanced Language Proficiency, (b) The Nature of English, and (c) English in Context.
  • A large number of elective subjects, grouped in three areas: (a) Media and Corporate Communication, (b) Applied English Language Studies, and (c) Global Languages.
  • Two subjects in the General Education (GE) area, each of which carries two academic credits, and Work-Integrated Education (WIE), which carries three training credits. These are compulsory subjects of a supporting nature. Their inclusion in the curriculum is for the purpose of developing “all-round students with professional competence”.

Study Pathway

Foundation Period: 52 Credits

  • 13 foundation subjects of English studies (39 credits)
  • 2 Chinese subjects offered by BACBS
  • 1 workplace training subject (Work-Integrated Education)
  • 2 General Education subjects

Deepening Period:

(students can complete this peirod in one of the following three pathways.)

1. The Single Discipline Pathway: 45 Credits

  • 15 elective subjects (45 credits) offered by BAESP (see Table 3 in Subjects), or
  • at least 10 electives from Table 3 and choose up to 5 electives (15 credits) from Table 4 (in Subjects)

2. The Major & Minor Pathway: 45 Credits

The pathway means that BAESP students may chose English Studies for the Professions as their Major and another discipline offered by PolyU as their Minor.

  • A BAESP student is allowed to take a maximum of 21 credits outside the BAESP Programme, among which 18 credits can form a Minor and be completed with any academic department at PolyU if the subjects selected meet the Minor requirements of the University as well as the Minor-offering Department.
  • The student must complete the remaining 3 credits by taking a subject at level 3 or higher in an academic department within the Faculty of Humanities, including the Department of English.

3. The Double Major Pathway: 133 Credits

A student may opt to graduate with Double Majors, English Studies for the Professions and Chinese and Bilingual Studies with 133 credits.

  • The minimum number of credits for each Major is 63.
  • If a BAESP student has decided to choose this double-major route, he or she must take two subjects offered by BACBS in the BAESP Foundation Period.
  • The student will also need to obtain a maximum number of 21 credits from the BACBS elective pool during the Deepening Period.
  • A student who opts to have Double Majors thus has to take 36 additional credits from BACBS to qualify for a Major in CBS. The extra 36 credits should be obtained on a self-financed basis normally in the fourth year.

Senior Year/Advanced Standing Students

Tailor-made Progress Pattern:

  • Students who directly enter Year 2 based on their previous academic results in an Associate Degree/Higher Diploma programme will in principle follow the BAESP Year-2 study pattern.
  • Due to their special status, they may be required to follow a tailor-made progression pattern specially designed for them so that they will be able to graduate within the normal time frame.
  • The progress pattern is provided upon registration.

Block credit-transfer:

  • Such students are normally given A block credit-transfer upon their entry into the programme.
  • This block credit transfer will be given and recorded in the form of “recognized credits” in your student record and these credits and subjects will not be displayed on the transcript.
  • No further credit transfer application will be entertained within the BAESP curriculum.
